LINCOLN, Neb. - The Lincoln Stars (16-14-4) allowed five unanswered goals against the Sioux City Musketeers (13-13-7), losing 6-3 on Friday night at the Ice Box.
Josh Groll scored for the third consecutive game, drawing first blood 2:04 into the opening frame for his team-leading 16th goal of the season. Josh Lopina doubled Lincoln’s lead 9:20 in with a power-play marker, but Sioux City quickly answered with Sam Stange’s goal at 12:24.
Matt Miller regained the Stars’ two-goal lead with a snipe at 14:03, but the Musketeers would respond in a big way. Three goals from Sioux City separated by 2:24 seconds followed with Sam Antenucci, Tommy Pasanen and Jared Grant lighting the lamp.
After one period, Lincoln was down 4-3 with the shots tied at nine apiece.
Following the seven-goal opening frame, neither team was able to score in the second period, while Sioux City controlled a 19-16 shot advantage heading into the third period.
Pasanen would add another goal 10:36 into the final frame of regulation and Antenucci would tap home an empty-net goal in the latter stages of the third.
Lincoln had their two-game winning streak snapped with the loss, despite outshooting Sioux City 26-24. The Stars were 5-for-5 on the penalty kill and 1-for-2 on the power play. Jake Mucitelli made 21 saves on 24 shots in the loss while Akira Schmid stopped 23 of 26 in the win for Sioux City.
