LINCOLN BEATS SIOUX FALLS FOR FOURTH TIME THIS SEASON

LINCOLN, Neb. - The Lincoln Stars (14-12-4) snapped their three-game winless streak, beating the Sioux Falls Stampede (11-15-3) 5-3 at the Ice Box on Friday night.

For the fourth straight game, the Stars scored first. Josh Groll lit the lamp 1:43 into the opening period, giving Lincoln an early lead with his 12th goal of the season. Christian Sarlo and Travis Treloar picked up the assists on the University of Michigan commit's goal.

Owen Michaels finished off a tremendous pass from Robby McCollum 12:09 into the first, doubling Lincoln’s lead. Michaels’ fifth goal of the season marked his second in as many games. The Stars outshot the Stampede 11-7 in the opening frame and headed into the second period up 2-0.

Jared Westcott scored shorthanded for Sioux Falls 5:45 into the second period, but Spencer Smith quickly regained Lincoln’s two-goal lead at 8:03. Like Michaels (who picked up an assist on the goal), Smith had scored in two consecutive games.

Dominic James registered the primary assist on the St. Catherine’s, ON native’s fourth goal of the year. Stars goaltender Jake Mucitelli shined in the second period, stopping several breakaway chances, keeping his team in front.

After two periods, the Stars were up 3-1.

Matt Barbolini notched his 12th goal of the season after beating Stampede goaltender Nate Reid from the left circle 60 seconds into the third period. Despite being down 4-1, Sioux Falls mounted a brief comeback. Garrett Pinoniemi and Austin Heidemann tallied goals 3:23 apart, cutting Lincoln’s lead to 4-3.

Brock Bremer answered for the Stars at 10:16 with his 8th goal of the 2019-20 campaign, beating Reid with a shot from the slot after being set up perfectly by Josh Lopina.

Mucitelli made 22 saves on 25 shots in the victory, while Reid allowed five goals on 29 shots. The Stars were 0-for-3 on the power play but did not take a minor penalty. Lincoln is now 4-0 against the Stampede this season, beating them twice at home and twice on the road.
