After the Stars participated in the 2012 USHL Futures Draft, the coaching staff had the following comments on the Stars' selections: “We're very excited about the players we drafted yesterday,” said Head Coach Chad Johnson. “Given the age of the players in the future's draft, I think most teams focus on those that have a lot of skill and playmaking ability, and that's certainly the case with our picks.”
Other comments:
Ryan Norman - Played for Shattuck St. Mary's U-16 team and had 61 points in 54 games. A highly skilled forward, strong skater, and point producer. Good hockey sense, and comes from good bloodlines, where his father was an Edmonton Oilers draft pick that played at North Dakota.
Dan Willett - A Northeastern commitment from Bayville, NY that played for the New Jersey Rockets last season. In 42 games, had 13 goals and 34 assists. A skilled puck-moving defenseman that is also very accountable in the d-zone.
Tyler Nanne- A highly skilled forward with excellent hockey sense and playmaking ability. Another player with good bloodlines that understands the game and comes from a strong program in Edina. The Stars' Minnesota scout Charlie Lentz was able to see Tyler play quite a bit and is very confident in his ability to play in this league.
Gordon Helmuth - Played for Little Caesars U-16 team last year and impressed the staff as a player that goes to the net hard, and plays with a lot of jam. Stars scout Danny Reidel was very high on him having seen him a lot this season as assistant coach for Little Caesars.
Jack Walker - A steal in the 5th round to get a player with his ability. Also from Edina. A highly touted player that attended the USNTDP development camp for the top 40 96's in the country. One of the higher rated players in his age group.
Michael Prapavessis - Very similar to his brother Matt in his puck moving ability, but can be a shut-down defenseman as well. Played last season for the Mississauga Rebels and had 20 points in 42 games.
“Overall, we're very excited about the Stars future, and these additions will definitely play big roles in the coming years. Going into the draft, we had hoped to get 3 forwards and 3 defensemen, and that's what we got, so we're happy about that, and looking forward to seeing these guys this summer at our camp. We'd expect that 2 of the six picks should compete for roster spots for the 12-13 season.”
